The Kitchen
Let’s talk about the food at the Millcroft. Our chef and part owner is passionate about cooking. She has travelled extensively and this is reflected in many of the dishes on the menu.
After 3 years the kitchen is able to source all meat, fish and shellfish locally or from the surrounding highlands. For example our Seafood Chowder and Cullen Skink style soup are a celebration of all the good food that comes from this fertile part of Scotland. The langoustines are creel caught from the bay of Gairloch. There isn’t much needed to be done with them; just boil for 4 minutes and serve with aioli or garlic butter. The same applies to our King Scallops cooked in garlic and parsley butter and served with hot crusty bread, salad and chips.
Gairloch boasts an award winning smokehouse in nearby Aultbea. Our Smoked Seafood Platter is a must with a glass of crisp white wine. One of our favourite ‘specials’ is slow roasted smoked salmon served hot on top of new potato and spring onion mash.
The local butcher supplies us with rib-eye steaks matured for 21 days. A philosophy of our kitchen is ‘source not sauce’! The local meat and wild venison speaks for itself from the chargriller and does not need complicated sauces to disguise the flavour or confuse the palate.
Also featured on the menu is Highland Mixed Grill, wonderful black pudding and haggis from nearby Aultbea, wild boar sausages and venison steaks.
We aim to cater for a wide variety of diets including those with coeliac and other allergy requirements. Vegetarians have a choice of at least 6 main course options and there is a large children’s menu which includes many healthy eating options. Platters are fresh and plentiful, our soups are wholesome and creative and all the pasta sauces are home made on the premises.
All good meals must come to an end so why not wind it up with something sweet? There are ice-creams for the children and a variety of desserts for the adults including our home made sticky date pudding served with lashings of butterscotch sauce. Lynn, also part owner, is the creator of all things indulgent, sticky date, pavlova and amazing soups to name a few.
